الزين و العين الزرقة

One of the most peaceful songs out there, you could sing to a baby and he would fall asleep immediatly. Enjoy!

The original version is mostly called "L'Américain" by Houcine Slaoui. But I prefer this version here :

The song is originally about the 1942 American military landing in Morocco, Operation Torch. American Soldiers landed in Casablanca, Kenitra, Safi and Tangier. Most Moroccans in that era was their first time seeing Americans, tall with blue/green eyes and charming smiles. There the song was born.

Lyrics

الزين والعــين الزرقــــة – جانا بكل خـير
اليوم يمشــــوا بالفرقــة – بناتنا بخـير
The handsome one with the blue eye – came to us in peace
Today they leave with a band – and our girls are fine

The American soldiers were handsome and mostly had blue eyes which Moroccans had mostly never seen at the time, the people were proud that they had such strong Allies, still are to this day. When he says our girls are fine, it means now the Americans are here, no one will dare to touch our girls.

شحال من هي معشوقـــة – داروا لها الشـان
المريكـــــان
تسمع غير "أوكي، أوكـي" – هذا ما كـــــــان
How many a beloved – they gave her prestige
The Americans
All you hear is "okay, okay" – that's how it was

Women at the time who spoke to American soldiers were considered elegant and their status elevated, all you heard around the streets of Casblanca at the time was Okay,Okay. People were proud.

Conclusion

The song is much more, this is just a snippet. The moral here is that it was many's first time seeing Americans. A fun fact is that Morocco is the first country in the world to recognize the United States of America. If we like it or not, we do have a shared history, even if the Atlantic Ocean seperates us.
